$100 Fine to Property Owners for Discarding Electronics
Effective January 2015, the City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) imposed the New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act which effectively prohibits disposing of electronics by way of regular garbage pick-up. Starting in April, property owners can be fined $100 if any electronic items are placed in the trash or at curbside.
DSNY will offer SAFE Disposal events throughout the year. Information on times and locations can be found by clicking here.
Owners of buildings with 10 or more units qualify for the DSNY e-cycleNYC free pick up service. To enroll, visit www.nyc.gov/ecycle
Barring these options, Goodwill, Salvation Army and retail stores such as Staples and Best Buy have programs where owners can drop off electronics.
